Regarding color / tone correction, the previous issue introduced the preparation details before color correction and the general steps of color correction work. It also used the data provided by the Info section and the ColorBalance tool to correct a picture with color cast problems. In this issue, the author will introduce the method of adjusting the color tone (or level) of the picture. This time the main character is Levels.
Levels (level adjustment)
The Levels tool can help us improve or change the color tone of the picture. For example, the main tone of the picture is too dark or too bright due to poor exposure. This adjustment can make the tone of the picture clear. To turn on the Levels level, you can use the menu Image> Adjustments> Levels or Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Levels, or you can use the small image of the level in the Adjustments section. The tips and methods of Levels adjustment are as follows:
1. Color gradation distribution diagram-very similar to Histogram, but Levels color gradation distribution diagram allows us to adjust the color tone through the black, white and gray buttons, and Histogram only provides reference data.
2. Black, white, and gray buttons-The gray button represents Gamma. When the gamma value is greater than 1.0, the brightness of the mid-tone is increased, and the number lower than 1.0 decreases the brightness. Gamma can adjust the brightness and contrast of the mid-tone without affecting the black level and white level, and the black and white buttons are divided into input (the button below the gradation distribution diagram) and output (the button below the black and white gradient bar). Change the button position or number to change the original black, white and gray tone.
3. Black, white, and gray probes—Select the black probe in the color gradation section to define the darkest position in the picture, the white probe defines the whitest position, and the gray probe is the midtone position. You can also use the gray probe to perform white balance or gray balance (white balance / gray balance) to eliminate color cast.
4. Channel-You can select a certain channel to change the color tone of the picture through the option Channel in the color scale section, or you can select a variable picture tone on the Channel section.
5. Levels Presets—channels combination, and then select the menu Image> Adjustments> Levels to change — there are multiple original preset options, users can quickly adjust the tone of the picture by clicking one of them. If the effect of the original preset is not optimal, we can select a preset close to the ideal, and then fine-tune it until we are satisfied. Finally, we can save this level adjustment for future reuse (select the command "SaveLevels" in the panel menu Preset ").
6. Auto-Finally, there is one of the laziest tone scale adjustment methods, that is, there is an Auto button on the tone scale adjustment panel, and the color tone can be adjusted automatically by the computer with only one click. However, this method is not always ideal, so it ’s better to adjust your mind with effort or effort!
