Gemma, a company renowned worldwide in the polyester industry, is currently developing a new technology for the production of polyester preforms, called DTP (direct preforms, the abbreviation for Direct to Preform), which can pass without a low IV. Solid-phase polycondensation (intrinsic viscosity) (SSP) is directly formed into a preform. In this technology, the final polycondensation of polyester is to use a double-shaft disc reactor, the IV of the produced polyester melt is above 0.8; but the acetaldehyde (AA) is higher, and Gema uses gas stripping and vacuum stripping. Aldehyde and other measures to reduce the AA content in the polyester melt to 1ppm or less.
Since the DTP technology eliminates the remelting of preforms made from SSP and bottle-grade polyester chips, the process is greatly simplified; investment can be reduced by about 20% compared to traditional preform technology. The aldehyde-removal equipment and the new preform production equipment are under development and are expected to be put into business within three years.
