Ampac Flexibles developed a pocket bag for Wyeast Laboratories that won the FPA's 2007 Gold Award for “Highest Achievement Award”.

The award-winning 50 mL and 125 mL "Smack Pack" recyclable self-supporting bags from Ampac were used to package Wyeast's pure liquid fermentation products.

The FPA judges considered the package to be "an unprecedented package of liquid yeast products containing beer and wine in the form of cooking bags."

This bag is resistant to high temperatures, flexibility and crack resistance. It uses a patented high-barrier adhesive composite membrane mechanism to isolate oxygen and ultraviolet light.

“Because the properties of fermented products are not stable, they are prone to deterioration and are difficult to preserve,” explains Jenny Logsdon, general manager of Wyeast Labs. “Yeast will be metabolized when oxygen is encountered, so the packaging of yeast must be able to isolate oxygen. Yeast must be in a crouching state. Metabolism cannot occur in the packaging. In addition, yeasts see light mutations that cause cells to die or reduce the number of cells. If stored at the appropriate temperature, the shelf life of our liquid yeast products can reach six months."

The Smack Pack is characterized by the fact that the outer bag contains a small bag (containing liquid malt nutrition base). When the consumer activates the yeast, he only needs to hit the outer bag to break the inner bag, and the nutrient base of the inner bag flows out to start the metabolic process of the yeast.
