Gas Sensor Solutions, Inc. (GSS) has developed the world's first oxygen- and pressure-sensitive plastic materials using conventional commercial packaging materials used in medicine, medical devices, and food packaging industries. The new smart plastic allows seal integrity and product environment monitoring without the need to open the package for inspection. This means that the packaging material is now self-diagnosed. New plastics are sensitive to both gas and pressure, and the low production cost ensures that the technology can be applied to any packaging area. GSS's technology was purchased in 2005 from the National Center for Sensor Research (NCSR) at DCU. The major breakthrough took place in late 2006, when GSS successfully developed oxygen and pressure-sensitive capabilities in its own R&D facilities into conventional commercial packaging materials such as polystyrene and polyethylene. Oxygen Intelligence can now be used to provide complete low-cost seal integrity assurance of products in the fields of medicine, medical equipment and food packaging, as well as monitoring of the packaging environment. Complete self-diagnosis and non-intrusive technologies for the product will replace the destructive statistical tests currently employed in many industries.
The valuable feature of this process is that it can be used throughout the supply chain. This feature is being used in the medical device market. Not only can the implanted hip or heart arterial stent be packaged at the manufacturing facility, but also in the operating room, the packaging must be guaranteed before placing it in the patient. The seal integrity, so know that 100% of the package is free from bacterial infections. With the increasing number of bacteria with antibiotic resistance, all sterile conditions including the use of instruments from medical devices to implant materials are extremely important. GSS is currently developing packaging materials solutions with 3 companies in the world's top medical equipment manufacturers to provide a wide range of monitoring technologies to the supply chain. GSS is active in many market segments in adhesive labeling and sensitive ink technology. GSS has found a wide range of sensor technologies for its extensive range of packaging, preservation of art, insulated glass, and security equipment. In food packaging GSS and major packaging suppliers have developed a special baby food sealing device. In the field of works of art, some well-known institutions in the world are using the GSS series, such as Tait, the National Museum of History in London, the Getty Museum and the Smithsonian. In the insulating glass market, GSS's non-intrusive sensing technology can control the presence or absence of argon gas between the two glass panels. This eliminates the need for destructive testing and allows direct control of the glass. An insulated argon component is used for this purpose. Munster Joinery, Ireland’s largest double glazing manufacturer, uses GSS's technology in all its factories.
Studies from Germany have shown that almost 40% of double-glazed panels have little or no argon after installation and that the issue of seal integrity has increased this figure sufficiently in the first year. Argon is a transparent gas. In the absence of destructive testing of the final product, there is no direct tool in the industry to ensure that it is used correctly. Without insulation gas, the heat insulation effect of the glass plate or the value of u significantly decreased.
Anti-counterfeiting application: The special photoelectric characteristics of the sensor give it a very good anti-counterfeiting properties. There are practical and economic difficulties in replicating the ability to process inductive materials that retain coded information, in addition to mastering knowledge across five specialized areas to allow economical use of a unique and robust identifier throughout the entire production process. Up to 40% of medical equipment and 10% of drugs in Asia are counterfeit, and formal products confirm that the global market is expected to have 3 billion US dollars and grow at a rate of 16% per year.
