Power Mac G5 test

On Wednesday, October 19, 2005, US time, Apple once again announced the upgraded Mac G5. This upgraded machine is the ultimate version of the Mac G5. Its hardware configuration and price also make people dumbfounded. But a week has passed, and the Mac G5 has not been seen in China. As a Chinese, we can't help but regret. Fortunately, there are already detailed evaluations abroad. Let's take a look at it below.

Introduction to the new Mac G5

The new PowerMac G5 products all adopt a dual-core quad-core design, PCI Express architecture and a more powerful graphics card (up to NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500). "The new PowerMac G5 Quad provides users with workstation-like Performance to meet the needs of creative and scientific research users! "Said Phil Schiller, senior assistant manager of Apple ’s Global Product Marketing Department. Quad is the most powerful system we have built! ".

The new PowerMac G5 Quad can support up to 16GB of 533Hz DDR2 SDRAM memory, and has two Gigabit website interfaces, which is also an ideal Xsan environment for users. The PowerMac G5 Quad is also equipped with a FireWire 800 interface, two FireWire 400 interfaces, four USB2.0, two USB1.1 interfaces, optical fiber and digital audio input and output interfaces, built-in Airport Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0 + ERD and a series of industry leaders High-speed input and output interface. The included mouse is also upgraded to Apple's powerful mouse, which can perform horizontal and vertical scrolling and multi-key support. The graphics cards included with the new PowerMac G5 are NVIDIA Geforce 6600 LE with 128M memory or Gefore 6660 with 256M. Both graphics cards support dual-head display on Apple's 30-inch Cinema HD display. And can be upgraded to 256M GeForce 7800 GT or 512M Quadro FX 4500 as needed. Quadro FX 4500 is ideal for animation and special effects rendering in software such as Maya and PyMol.

In terms of price, the PowerMac G5 2.0 GHz and 2.3 GHz are priced at US $ 1,999 (equivalent to approximately RMB 16,000) and US $ 2,499 (equivalent to approximately RMB 20,000). The highest-end PowerMac G5 Quad will be available in early November, and the price will start at US $ 3,299 (equivalent to approximately RMB 26,400).

A closer look at the new Mac G5 after disassembly

In appearance, the new Mac G5 is basically the same as the old Mac G5 except for a few changes. The wireless and Bluetooth antennas behind the body of the old Mac G5 disappeared from the new Mac G5. Instead, a 10-inch rubber antenna is attached to the back of the machine.

On the new Mac G5, Apple introduced a so-called "link aggregation" feature to the outside world. This is mainly due to its "tiger" operating system, which has integrated the 802.3ad protocol, users can enjoy the theoretical transfer rate of 2gigabit per second.

MAC G5 back

Mac G5's biggest upgrade may be its processor. From today, you can find a dual-core one in the task manager when running Mac G5, but we can only see a processor plugged into the motherboard! How does it work?

The new Mac G5 uses IBM's latest PowerPC 970MP dual-core processor. Dual core is the integration of two cores on a chip, each core has a 1MB of secondary cache. Compared with the design in which two processors are plugged into the motherboard at the same time, the transmission speed is faster.

External interface on the back

In addition to using the latest processors, the other major change of the new Mac G5 is that they will fully shift to DDR2 memory. On the motherboard, we can see 8 DIMM memory slots, which allows the new Mac G5 to support a maximum memory capacity of 16GB. In addition, there is a 16x PCI Express slot on the motherboard, an 8x PCI Express slot and two 4x PCI Express slots.

8 DIMM memory slots

The graphics card of the new Mac G5 uses nVidia 6600. It is plugged into that 16x PCI Express slot. This graphics card has 256MB of video memory and supports dual monitor output.

As before, we can find the SATA interface on the new Mac G5. This time Apple equipped the Mac G5 with a 7,200 rpm hard drive with a capacity of 250GB. In addition, the optical drive of the new Mac G5 has also been updated, it supports double-layer burning, so that the user's storage capacity reaches 8.5GB per disc.

New cable

Surprisingly, Apple has finally adopted a new power cable this time. But the new cable is 3-5 times more expensive than the average.

Huge radiator

We opened the side door of the machine and immediately understood why Apple did not launch the Powerbook G5. The processor cooling system of the whole machine was quite huge. We still cannot clearly understand whether Apple is improving their heat dissipation issues on the new Mac G5 system. In addition, all new and new series of Mac G5 will use Apple's new Mighty Mouse.

Comparison test of old and new Mac G5

Three machines were used in our test, one is the new G5 DualCore 2.0GHz, the second is G5 DualCore 2.3GHz, and the last is the old G5 dual 2.5GHz with a water cooling system. This G5 dual 2.5GHz is equipped with GeForce 6800 Ultra graphics card. In addition, the new G5 DualCore 2.0GHz has two hard drives and uses a RAID-0 mode disk array, so its hard drive test results are higher than normal. The test software we used is Testresults Xbench 1.2.

Through our testing, it is not difficult to find that the performance of the new Mac G5 is still considered to be the upgrade task. This upgrade may be the most important upgrade before Apple officially switches to the Intel processor. The upgraded Mac G5 allows us to see some of the functional improvements brought by the new processor, the more important thing is that the DDR2 memory it uses is to improve the performance of the entire system.

But it is not difficult to find that a dual-core can not qualitatively improve the performance of Mac G5. We predict that the performance of the new Quad 2.5GHz Powermac, which will be available in November, will have a performance improvement of more than 70%.

From the above results, it is not difficult to find that the 2.3 GHz Dual Core score is higher than the G5 dual 2.5GHz machine with GeForce 6800 Ultra graphics card. The biggest difference is in the performance of the memory, not the gap between the processors we used to think. Although we cannot guarantee that the Xbench test results are completely correct, at least it also gives us a reference.
