The spring semester of 2016 has just begun. There are only a few people in the laboratory of the College of Biological Science and Technology of Yangzhou University, but the virtual simulation experiment teaching center (hereinafter referred to as the experimental center) is busy. The students carried out various experiments in the virtual environment, tried their own scientific research ideas, and also tested various experimental results.

The Experimental Center was established in 2012. Since its inception, the center has worked hard to improve the construction of the experimental teaching network platform in accordance with the requirements of normal experimental teaching and the requirements of the state for the construction of experimental teaching centers, combined with the development of biology and technology, and strive to integrate virtual simulation into experimental teaching. Not long ago, the Experimental Center officially passed the national-level virtual simulation experiment teaching center organized by the Ministry of Education, and became the only national-level virtual simulation experiment teaching center of Yangzhou University.

So, what kind of experimental center is this?

For seventeen years, just to do better

In fact, as early as the establishment of the center many years ago, the College of Biological Science and Technology of Yangzhou University has begun the exploration of digital technology to assist teaching.

In the interview, Zhang Wei, director of the Experimental Center, told the reporter of the Chinese Journal of Science and Technology that as early as 1999, the College of Biological Science and Technology of Yangzhou University had begun to build up digital experimental teaching resources. In 2002, the college began again. For the construction of the network teaching platform, and in 2005, a "three-in-one" experimental teaching platform was initially formed.

It is with such a strong technical accumulation that the experimental center was established in 2012 and developed rapidly. In the past two years, the Center has built a multi-functional online teaching platform for biological experiment courses in accordance with the virtual simulation experiment teaching resource construction system of “one platform, two types of terminals, three modules and twelve courses”.

"We explored the original intention of incorporating virtual simulation technology into teaching. It is hoped that fundamentally avoiding the harm caused by some toxic and harmful biochemical reagents to students, and encouraging students to develop good preparation habits and shorten the experimental teaching time." Operational information, only to teach more

Different from the fixed operation flow of the original experiment, the virtual simulation test realizes all-round information from beginning to end.

Under the leadership of Zhang Wei, the reporter “visited” the “Virtual Simulation Experiment Center” and saw the carefully classified experimental modules. “The virtual simulation laboratory is divided into four parts: experimental reservation, experimental assessment, shared resources, and online communication. In the experiment, it is not only the experimental operation, but also the experimental pre-study and post-experiment communication. This is often overlooked, so that students can not get comprehensive knowledge." Director Zhang Wei said.

Due to the virtual simulation technology, the human-machine interface image, the operation can be repeated, and the teaching content is rich, the students are not only limited to the mechanical experimental operation process, but also can further observe the fine structure inside the animal tissue and understand the internal operation mode of the organ.

When talking about whether the virtual experiment will affect the students' actual operation, Wei Wanhong, the president of the Academy of Sciences, told the reporter that the virtual simulation experiment is for the actual experiment. Because the biological experiment has the characteristics of high cost, large failure rate and less experimental materials, the students are skilled in operating techniques through virtual simulation experiments. On the basis of actual operation, the implementation of auxiliary information-based teaching can better serve the actual experiment, assist the teachers in teaching, and let the students learn independently.

Learn for an unlimited time, only for a wider audience

In order to further facilitate the experimental operation of students, the virtual simulation laboratory has created a teaching mode of “learning, operation, and assessment for an unlimited time”.

According to reports, the virtual simulation experiment teaching has become an indispensable part of the professional and experimental teaching of the three majors, more than 400 students per academic year. Students can use it directly through the network, and conduct online recording learning dynamics, assessment virtual experiment operations, and the process and results are equally important.
