U.S. discovers new evidence of groundwater on Mars

Editor's note: In the past year, NASA has made great progress in the survey of Mars. A few days ago, the Mars probe of the United States discovered traces of ancient rivers on Mars. Recently, by analyzing the data obtained by the Mars survey orbiter, new evidence of the existence of groundwater on Mars was discovered. Related research reports were published in the new issue of the online edition of the journal Nature and Earth Science.

NASA recently discovered new evidence that Mars had groundwater by analyzing data obtained by the Mars survey orbiter.

The data obtained by the Mars Survey Orbiter's observation of the Mars McLaughlin pit shows that the rock layer at the bottom of the pit is rich in carbonate and clay minerals. Clay minerals are a type of hydrous silicate minerals whose formation is inseparable from water. The NASA said in a statement that the new findings indicate that carbonates and clay were formed in the lake that was once supplied by groundwater in the pit.

In addition, a small water channel inside the McLaughlin pit with a diameter of 92 kilometers and a depth of 2.2 kilometers appeared within a range of about 500 meters upward from the bottom of the pit. Scientists believe that this is the water level of the lake in the pit in the past.
